Our team of maternal fetal medicine physicians provide specialized care for women with high-risk pregnancies. These experts work passionately across the state to deliver the best outcomes for mother and baby. In addition, the maternal fetal telehealth program offers specialty care to women who have high-risk pregnancies regardless of where they live in South Carolina
No parent wants to hear there's something unusual or different about his or her much-anticipated baby. If that should happen, though, baby and mother will be in excellent hands at MUSC Health's Advanced Fetal Care Center, designed specifically to guide pregnant women and their babies from diagnosis through postnatal care.
Bringing together some of the nation's finest minds in multidisciplinary teams to focus solely on helping each woman and baby, the center's mission is to provide comprehensive diagnosis, seamless coordinated care, and maternal-fetal treatment for pregnant women with a suspected or confirmed fetal congenital anomaly.
The comprehensive team of maternal fetal medicine experts include:
Bridging the prenatal (before birth) and postnatal (after birth) care periods, the Advanced Fetal Care Center has been carefully and thoughtfully designed to serve as a portal of entry for these children into well-coordinated, specialized care at MUSC Children's Health, one of the top-ranked children's hospitals in South Carolina and the United States.
It begins while the child is still in the womb, continues through delivery and the first few months afterward, and extends through post-surgical follow-up and childhood.
For instance, if an expected child has a suspected heart defect that may require surgery, MUSC Health experts in pediatric cardiology and pediatric surgery will join that baby's care team and work closely with mother and child for as long as there's a need. A special fetal care navigator will also join the team to serve as the mother's personal liaison, setting up all needed appointments and guiding her throughout the process.
Finding out about a congenital anomaly can be worrying enough without trying to seek out the best specialists for the new baby and scheduling time separately with each one. Many times a parent won't even know which specialists are needed. Now they won't have to. Our center was designed to take care of that for new parents, allowing them to simply focus on working with a single, integrated medical care team to take the best possible steps forward for their new child.
"Best Of" Integrated Care Model
By integrating the best of MUSC Women’s Health and MUSC Children's Health, our Advanced Fetal Care Center has been designed to deliver the highest quality of care and patient-centered experiences, including early pediatric sub-specialty evaluations, multidisciplinary treatment, personal counseling and support, and seamless care transitions from prenatal to postnatal life.
Our medical expertise runs both deep and broad at MUSC Women’s Health. Conditions treated by our Advanced Fetal Care Center include chest abnormalities, cardiac defects, gastrointestinal disorders, renal and urological disorders, neurologic problems, fetal tumors, genetic abnormalities, and complications of multiple gestation pregnancies.
A dedicated fetal care navigator schedules appointments, coordinates care with all specialists needed, organizes hospital tours, streamlines communication and support, and provides a direct point of contact for pregnant mothers and families.
Advanced Fetal Diagnostic Imaging
Our obstetric and cardiac sonographers are among the best in the field, able to detect and catch what others might not. Our advanced technologies include fetal echocardiography with 2D, color, and pulse Doppler; fetal MRIs, and obstetric imaging.
Infants with congenital anomalies can require especially comprehensive medical care, often including specialized infant and pediatric intensive care units, surgery during the newborn period, and interdisciplinary teams with expertise in congenital anomalies.
Our maternal fetal health services are available across the state. Our maternal fetal telehealth program offers specialty care to women who have high-risk pregnancies, regardless of where they live. This is especially important in rural South Carolina, where a number of counties have too few or no obstetrical providers. Our telehealth program pairs our maternal fetal medicine specialists with local providers to manage the care of women with high-risk pregnancies using secure video technology. It protects your privacy while allowing real-time conversations. We believe all women and their newborns deserve a chance to have the best possible outcome.
