Congratulations to the MUSC Pediatric ECMO team and program for receiving their second Platinum Level Center of Excellence Award in Life Support from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). MUSC Health’s ECMO team consists of 40 critical care nurses and respiratory therapists who undergo intensive training to manage patients on ECMO. It is the only pediatric ECMO center in the state of South Carolina. Last year alone, it treated 31 pediatric patients that required ECMO intervention, placing it in the top quartile of the busiest ECMO programs in the United States.

To receive this award, programs must demonstrate excellence in seven different areas, including patient-centered care and in-depth, state-of-the-art training. This award is the highest attainable level of achievement for ECMO and only 16 pediatric hospitals globally have achieved this designation.

MUSC Children’s Health Providers Recognized with MUSC Foundation Faculty Awards

Two MUSC Children’s Health providers were recognized as 2022 Foundation Faculty Award Recipients. Allison Eckard, M.D., received the Population Health Award as a faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution that impacts the health of a population or community by means other than by direct clinical care with patients.

Jason Buckley, M.D., received the Outstanding Clinician Award as a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to patient care. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a high level of professionalism, integrity and devotion to patient care. The faculty member’s clinical excellence and service commitment identify them as role models for residents, students and their colleagues.

Drs. Buckley and Eckard will be recognized formally at the James W. Colbert Lectureship and Faculty Awards & Recognition Ceremony.

MUSC Women’s Health Prenatal Genetic Counselor Honored

Congratulations to Prenatal Genetic Counselor Paige Babb on being awarded the Victoria A. Vincent Clinical Supervision Award for 2022 from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. This award recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact within the field of genetic counseling and the University of South Carolina Genetic Counseling Program.

MUSC Children's Health Provider Recognized by American Academy of Pediatrics

Michelle Macias, M.D., has been awarded the prestigious Arnold J. Capute Award for 2022. The Capute Award is presented each year to an American Academy of Pediatrics member for outstanding contributions in the filed of children with disabilities.

MUSC Children’s Health Researchers Awarded Pilot Grants

Laura Carpenter, Ph.D., & Martin Kang, Ph.D. were selected as the Department of Pediatrics 2022 Pilot Grant Awardees at the 14^th Department of Pediatrics and Darby Children’s Research Institute Symposium. They will each receive $50,000 for their projects. Dr. Carpenter’s research is centered on coaching children with anxiety and autism through telehealth. Dr. Kang’s work is on novel strategies to improve gene therapy efficacy in lungs.

The Committee on Drugs Chairperson Appointment: John "Routt" Reigart, M.D., FAAP

The Board of Directors of the American Academy of Pediatrics voted to appoint John "Routt" Reigart, MD, FAAP, as Chairperson of the Committee on Drugs (COD), effective July 1, 2022. The committee reviews all aspects of pediatric pharmacology. Dr. Reigart has worked in pediatric toxicology and pharmacology since joining the MUSC faculty in 1972. Until recently, he was the President of the SC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. This is an incredible honor and recognition on a national scale. Congratulations!

MUSC Children's Health Verified as Level 1 Children's Surgery Center

Congratulations to MUSC Children's Health on being verified as a Level 1 Children's Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Children’s Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program. This verification represents perioperative spaces at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and MUSC Children's Health R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion. MUSC Children's Health joins 40 other children's hospitals nationally and three facilities in the southeast with this distinction.

MUSC Health Immunology Center Designated as a Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic & Research Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies

The MUSC Health center joins the Jeffrey Modell Foundation network of over 400 programs at academic medical institutions in 87 countries with 42 located at major children's hospitals across the United States. The Foundation's goal is to facilitate early, precise diagnosis of primary immune deficiency disorders (PIDDs) in children and adults and their appropriate, meaningful treatment.

MUSC Children's Health's Kelli Williams, M.D., MPH, will serve as Center Director for the Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic & Research Center at MUSC Health.

MUSC Pediatric Heart Center Recognized for "Exceptional Care"

The MUSC Pediatric Heart Program was recognized as providing exceptional care by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Public Reporting. This designation comes from a 4-year analytic time window comparing mortality rates, high-risk operations and length of stay.

Since public reporting began in the spring of 2015, MUSC's Pediatric Heart Program has consistently been recognized for exceptional care with better than expected outcomes, joining between six-twelve other programs out of more than 120 nationwide.

MUSC Children's Health Provider Receives Award for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Mileka Gilbert, M.D., was awarded the 2022 MLK Humanitarian Award by the Black History Intercollegiate Consortium (BHIC) for significant contributions in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.

The MLK Humanitarian Award honors a community member who embodies the ideals of racial equity, inclusivity and social justice espoused by Martin Luther King Jr.

MUSC Children's Health Fellow Honored with Award and Research Funding

Pediatric cardiology fellow Mohammad Al-mousily, M.D., was selected as the winner of the American Academy of Pediatrics 2021 Pediatric Cardiology Research Fellowship Award for his research on the use artificial intelligence with ECGs to quickly identify children with structural heart disease.

Comprehensive Stroke Center Honors

MUSC Health has been recognized again by The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. This certification identifies that MUSC Health has the capabilities to receive and treat patients with the most complex strokes.

As the first hospital in South Carolina to receive this recognition in 2016, MUSC Health again underwent a rigorous onsite review to earn the Disease-Specific Care Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification. The Joint Commission experts assessed MUSC Health’s compliance with the Comprehensive Stroke Center standards and requirements, including advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments, and staff with the unique education and competencies to provide the most advanced level of stroke care achievable.

Remember, BE FAST if you suspect a stroke.

B - Balance (Is the person suddenly having trouble with balance or coordination?)
E - Eyes (Is the person experiencing suddenly blurred or double vision or a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes?)
F - Face Drooping (Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.)
A- Arm Weakness (Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?)
S - Speech Difficulty (Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand?)
T - Time to call 911 (If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately.)

Annie Andrews, MD Selected to Become Riley Fellow

Congratulations to Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Advocacy, Annie Andrews, MD on being selected as a Riley Fellow.

As a fellow, Dr. Andrews will join other distinguished leaders from across South Carolina who are committed to creating social and economic progress to participate in the Diversity Leaders Initiative (DLI), an award-winning program of Furman University's Riley Institute.

Dr. Andrews is one of 42 individuals to be selected from a rigorous application and interview process to join the 15th Lowcountry cohort.

MUSC Children’s Health Provider Recognized by South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics

Dr. Janice Key, director of MUSC’s Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness has received the 2021 Career Achievement Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (SCAAP). This award is given to a South Carolina pediatrician or child health care provider whose career has spanned at least 25 years. In addition, they must have made significant contributions to the advancement of child health in at least two of the following three areas: 1) clinical practice or academic medicine; 2) child advocacy; 3) leadership in organized medicine at the local, state, or regional/national level.
