Raymond N. DuBois, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, was recently recognized by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) for his global leadership in the early detection, interception and prevention of colorectal cancer. Among his many contributions to cancer research and the cancer community, DuBois discovered the role of prostaglandins (PGs) and cyclooxygenase in the genesis and progression of colon cancer and unraveled the functions of PGs in the tumor microenvironment. He pioneered the concept of targeting these inflammatory pathways for cancer prevention, facilitat-ing the start of clinical trials to examine the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory mediators as preventive therapies.

DuBois received the Margaret Foti Award for Leadership and Extraordinary Achievements in Cancer Research at the AACR’s 2019 annual meeting, held in early April. This award was established in 2007 to recognize a champion of cancer research who has had a major impact on the field. “Dr. DuBois is a highly distinguished researcher whose innovative work has made him an international leader in the field of early detection and prevention  of the disease,” said Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (hc), CEO of the AACR. “I am thrilled that he has been chosen by the selection committee to receive this award.”
