Weight Management Center

Focus Carolina Program

*Now available to all residents of South Carolina and North Carolina*

The MUSC Health Weight Management Center has gone statewide — in both South Carolina and North Carolina — with our most popular weight management programs! Leveraging the latest technology, we're now able to meet with you over the internet (via computer, smartphone, and tablet), using the simplest and most secure telemedicine technology. Located in South Carolina’s premier academic medical center and actively involved in obesity research, we are delighted that the entire states of South and North Carolina can now benefit from the most current, safe, and effective weight management programs. Our Focus Carolina programs can help you make the long-term changes that are so important for long-term success.

Please do NOT be intimidated by the prospect of online sessions. Attending an online session with our weight management professionals is as simple as clicking a web link. Online sessions are simple and secure.

We offer three programs via telemedicine. They are all similar, but vary in their lengths. Each program is described below and you can find out costs and how to enroll at the bottom of the page.

Focus Carolina-15

Focus Carolina-15 is a 15-week lifestyle change program; we also include three additional follow-up visits at the end of the initial program. Sessions are held online in real-time, using the simplest and most secure telemedicine technology. This program is designed to induce larger initial weight losses than traditional lifestyle change programs. The early part of the program provides a highly structured dietary intervention, which consists primarily of meal replacements (shakes and nutrition bars). The program also integrates the adoption of an active lifestyle through both an exercise program and active leisure. Gradually, as the program progresses, there is a shift towards a primarily food-based meal plan that leads to more moderate and sustainable weight loss. You "attend" weekly individual appointments that rotate among the clinical specialties (dietary, exercise, and behavioral); these visits are held online in real-time. If you choose them, in-person visits are certainly allowed in place of online visits.

Diet:

  • Phase 1 (Weeks 1 through 8): For this first phase of the program, your diet consists of approximately 1040 to 1200 calories per day, derived primarily from nutrition bars and shakes; you consume one highly structured, food-based meal per day.
  • Phase 2 (Weeks 9 and 10): Following the initial eight weeks of the program, you “step down” to a partial meal replacement-based plan with two highly structured, food-based meals per day.
  • Phase 3 (Weeks 11 through 15): At the end of 10 weeks, you meet with a registered dietitian who develops a nutritionally balanced diet designed to meet your individual long-term nutritional requirements. Note that each patient has the option of extending the duration of each phase of the program, pending approval by clinical staff.

Exercise:

Exercise comes in many forms. The goal of this program is to help you explore a wide array of activities for a more active lifestyle. While regular exercise sessions (e.g. walking, cycling, or resistance training) are essential, other calorie-burning leisure activities can be extremely helpful (e.g. nature walks or flying a kite). Finally, daily lifestyle can also be adjusted to help burn more calories (e.g. taking the stairs or parking further away). The Focus program is specifically designed to help you become a more active person and to develop a lifestyle that can lead to long-term maintenance of weight loss.

Program Includes:

  • Sixteen weekly individual consultations with registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, and behavioral specialists; all sessions occur online in real-time, using the simplest and most secure telemedicine technology.
  • Three additional follow-up consultations with registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, or behavioral specialists (your choice); you decide the frequency of these consultations, although they are to be used at least once per month.
  • Fitbit® Zip (wearable activity tracker).
  • Calorie book.
  • Curriculum book.
  • Labs (i.e. blood tests) at beginning and end of program. (Note: labs are not obtained on our North Carolina patients.)
  • Shakes and bars for 10 weeks (as stipulated in dietary prescription).
  • Optional Add-On ($405): Fitbit® Aria wireless bathroom scale PLUS 6 months of weight monitoring and personalized feedback by WMC registered dietitians, psychologists, and exercise physiologists. This gives us a means of tracking your weight even if you're not coming in each week to weigh in-person, and we’ll track your weight even after you’ve completed your program as a means of assisting you with weight maintenance (or continued weight loss). READ: INCREASED ACCOUNTABILITY! We will send you weekly feedback for the first three months, followed by every other week feedback for the next three months. You have the option of starting your 6 months of monitoring/feedback either at the beginning of your Focus Carolina program or at the completion of it. After the first six months, you can continue having us provide you with weight monitoring/feedback by adding additional time.

Focus Carolina-23 & Focus Carolina-27

Focus Carolina-23 and Focus Carolina-27 are simply extended versions of our Focus Carolina-15 program (described above). These two variations of the Focus Carolina-15 program allow you to extend how long you follow the more structured, meal replacement-based phases of the program. Focus Carolina-23 and Focus Carolina-27 allow you to continue on a mostly meal replacement-based diet for longer than you would on the Focus Carolina-15 program. As with the Focus Carolina-15 program, these extended programs also integrate the adoption of an active lifestyle through both an exercise program and active leisure. Gradually, as the programs progress, there is a shift towards a primarily food-based meal plan that leads to more moderate and sustainable weight loss. You "attend" weekly individual appointments that rotate among the clinical specialties (dietary, exercise, and behavioral); these visits are held online in real-time. If you choose them, in-person visits are certainly allowed in place of online visits.

Diet:

  • Phase 1 (Focus Carolina-23: Weeks 1 through 16; Focus Carolina-27: Weeks 1 through 20): For this first phase of the program, your diet consists of approximately 1040 to 1200 calories per day, derived primarily from nutrition bars and shakes; you also consume one highly structured, food-based meal per day.
  • Phase 2 (Focus Carolina-23: Weeks 17 and 18; Focus Carolina-27: Weeks 21 and 22): Following the initial phase of the program, you “step down” to a partial meal replacement-based plan with two highly structured, food-based meals per day.
  • Phase 3 (Focus Carolina-23: Weeks 19 through 23; Focus Carolina-27: Weeks 23 through 27): At the end of Phase 2, you meet with a registered dietitian who develops a nutritionally balanced diet designed to meet your individual long-term nutritional requirements. Note that each patient has the option of extending the duration of each phase of the program, pending approval by clinical staff.
