Tele-Neurology

A variety of neurologic conditions require urgent, specialized care. This may create significant challenges for community hospitals as many do not have the population base necessary to support access to a full-time neurologist.

MUSC’s teleneurology program expands its well-established telestroke program to meet the need for specialty consultations for a wide range of critical and complex neurologic conditions. These may include migraines, altered mental status, seizures, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as less serious conditions. Approximately 25% of consults are for patients who have symptoms of dizziness, pain and numbness. Teleneurology also provides follow-up and secondary stroke prevention possibly preventing a transfer to a tertiary medical center.

This program provides both scheduled and urgent consultations. The evaluation assists in determining if the patient requires transfer to a higher level of care. Providing expert consultation locally saves cost and helps keep the patient within their community, while assisting in alleviating minority disparities.

Consultations for neurologic conditions are in both the emergency and inpatient settings providing patient evaluation, diagnostic, and treatment recommendations.

  • Scheduled teleneurology consultations are available from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., 7 days a week.
  • Urgent consultations are available 24/7.
  • Teleneurology volume for 2018 is expected to exceed 3,000 consultations.
