The MUSC Health Tele-ICU Operations Center is delivering 24/7, continuous patient monitoring of partner hospital ICU patients by MUSC Health and Advanced ICU Care intensivists and nursing staff. This transformational program uses proactive technological and medical advances to leverage remote clinical expertise and decision support to improve patient outcomes and support ICU clinicians in partner hospitals.
Hospitals with this Tele-ICU model have seen remarkable results.
Clinical Decision Support
System alerts produced by sophisticated algorithm software inform remote Tele-ICU physicians and nurses of important trends in patient condition enabling proactive clinical decision making and early identification of potential problems.
Real-time audiovisual communication between Tele-ICU clinicians and clinical staff and families at partner hospitals. The platform includes continuous, sophisticated vital sign monitoring technology integrated with existing monitors and EMR.
MUSC Health has developed a multimodal program to enhance critical care in South Carolina. The ICU Innovations program includes rigorous focus on patient safety and quality improvement, interprofessional team education, protocol development and implementation, and clinical case conferences.
Interprofessional Team Education
The interprofessional team education is provided by MUSC Health physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists to partner hospitals’ physicians and ICU staff on a quarterly basis during onsite two-hour seminars. The objectives are to improve multidisciplinary team work in the critical care environment and provide tangible quality improvement initiatives applicable to the specific and unique needs of partner hospitals.
Recurring Case Conferences
Scheduled at the convenience of partner hospitals, these teleconferences will focus on best practice treatment for difficult or intriguing clinical presentations. Multidisciplinary involvement at both MUSC Health and partner hospitals will produce well rounded management discussions and collaborative approaches to problem solving.
