Surgical Site Infection Rates (SSI)

Why we measure this

Surgical Site Infection Rates (SSI) are infections that can occur at the site of a surgery incision. These infections can be serious, and our goal is to have zero.

How we measure this

We measure our surgical site infection rates using a risk-adjusted Standard Infection Ratio (SIR) that compares our actual rate against our expected rate based on the performance of other U.S. hospitals..

What we do to improve

MUSC providers are very careful with the skin before, during and after surgeries to reduce the risk of these infections. The Centers for Disease Control offers information on what patients can do to prevent SSI.
