Lucian V. Del Priore, M.D., Ph.D. has been appointed by Etta D. Pisano, M.D., Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the College of Medicine of MUSC to be Chair of the MUSC Department of Ophthalmology and Director of Storm Eye Institute. Dr. Del Priore comes to Storm Eye from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he serves as Professor of Ophthalmology and Robert L. Burch III Scholar. He will be joining MUSC on or before October 1, 2011.
Dr. Del Priore received his BS in physics from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, an MS in physics from Cornell University, an M.D. with distinction in research from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and a Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center from 1983-1984 followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute from 1984-1987. Dr. Del Priore then completed fellowships in Glaucoma and Vitreoretinal Surgery from 1987-1989 at The Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served on the faculty at The Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey prior to joining the faculty at Columbia University in 2000.
A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Specialists, and the International Society for Eye Research, Dr. Del Priore also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Ophthalmology. He also serves as founding member and treasurer of two small startup companies – RegenaSight and Advanced Ocular Technology. Dr. Del Priore has published extensively in peer-reviewed publications, has given numerous invited lectures, and has an extensive research background.
A specialist in retinal disease, glaucoma and vitreoretinal surgery, Del Priore has developed surgical techniques for improving the wet form of AMD, which accounts for about 90 percent of all blindness caused by this disease. He and his team are working on improving treatments to control the leaking of blood vessels under the retina.
Dr. Del Priore brings an exceptional combination of clinical, teaching, research, and administrative skills to lead the growth and development of Storm Eye Institute.
