Heart & Vascular Center

MUSC Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery have been recognized by US News & World Report as nationally ranked, best in South Carolina, and this year as “high-performing,” with “much better than expected” mortality statistics and a high reputation score.

The Heart and Vascular Center at MUSC provides full-service, comprehensive cardiovascular care with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art programs in minimally invasive surgical procedures (including catheter- based aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair as well as minimally invasive surgical mitral valve repair), advanced treatment for congestive heart failure (including cardiac assist and transplantation), structural heart interventions (including left atrial appendage closure, septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, catheter closure of congenital heart defects), catheter-based treatments for severe hypertension, state-of-the-art treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders (including ablation procedures for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias as well as leadless defibrillators), and innovative surgical procedures (including valve-sparing aortic valve replacement and complex catheter-based aortic repair).  The MUSC Heart and Vascular Center has the only training programs in cardiology, cardiac surgery, and vascular surgery in South Carolina and has more than 30 active clinical trials, as well as basic research that is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Replacement


Valve specialists at the Heart Valve Center (HVC) at MUSC were among the first in the nation to perform transcatheter aortic-valve replacement (TAVR), a percutaneous procedure for implanting a heart valve in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS).

The Lariat™ Procedure at MUSC is lowering stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation.

An Entirely Subcutaneous ICD


Subcutaneous ICDs found to detect supraventricular arrhythmias with more accuracy than did traditional ICDs for patients at risk for dangerous arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.
