Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, traumatic injuries, and developmental or genetic deformities of the face, mouth, dentition, jaws, and neck. Functional, pathologic, and cosmetic problems are managed by these physicians.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) at the Medical University of South Carolina is part of MUSC Health and the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. The diagnosis and consultative practice is located in the Clinical Sciences Building (CSB) with outpatient surgery performed in the Outpatient Procedure Center in Rutledge Tower. Inpatient surgery is performed at the MUSC Main Hospital. The surgeons work closely with one another and with other specialists at MUSC Health to provide comprehensive care to patients.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons diagnose and surgically treat diseases, injuries, and defects of the oral (teeth and mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) regions. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons at the Medical University of South Carolina have extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and management of traumatic facial injuries, perform bone grafting, care for patients with tumors and cysts of the jaws, and provide implant surgery for patients with missing teeth. They also treat impacted teeth, such as “wisdom teeth” (third molars), misaligned jaws, and dental infections of the head and neck. Another significant part of their training is the acquisition of knowledge and skill in pain control methods, including intravenous sedation.
