Diagnostic Evaluation

Are you interested in enhancing your interpreting skills but are unsure of what is needed and where to begin? Are you looking for guidance and specific feedback on how to improve? Are you considering taking the national exam but want some feedback before you do?

The Medical Interpreter Training Center has partnered with the National Center for Interpretation Testing (NCI) to offer diagnostic evaluations to community interpreters. These evaluations will assess a healthcare interpreter’s competencies in medical terminology, sight translation, and consecutive interpretation. The overarching goal of the diagnostic skills assessment is to identify target areas for skill development and enhancement, and suggest specific activities for the interpreter to work on to address these areas. New interpreters aspiring to sit for local or national credentials may benefit from a diagnostic assessment and receive specific advice on how to improve the overall quality and accuracy of their interpretation between Spanish and English.

This approach yields more than the general feedback that might be exchanged based on an observation of an interpreter while they are working.  It is a complex and comprehensive process of analysis designed to reveal the current state of linguistic and cognitive competence of  the interpreter for the purpose of guiding professional development activities.

Assessments will consist of three sections, and will take about 1 hour. It is conducted via webcam in a pre-recorded  format. Candidates will be connected with an evaluator who will score the candidate’s performance. The charge for this service will be one-hundred seventy-five dollars ($175). Services includes a detailed written report of the diagnostic assessment.

Diagnostic services will be offered, by appointment only. For more information, contact the Medical Interpreter Training Center at interpretertraining@musc.edu  or call us at (843) 792-9055.
