MUSC Children’s Health has been recognized as a “shining star” for its deep commitment to a culture of patient safety. In 2017, MUSC joined the Child Health Patient Safety Organization, a network of about 60 children’s hospitals and part of the Children’s Hospital Association. The network is dedicated to ensuring all pediatric patients get the safest care available when coming to the hospital. MUSC Health has also participated in Solutions for Patient Safety, another national collaborative that distinguishes our commitment to quality and safety.
Both patient quality and safety organizations believe in an approach of transparency and best practice in making a culture shift to error and harm prevention. “Hospitals that participate in both are truly deeply invested in safety. I think they are our shining stars,” said Kate Conrad, vice president of the Children’s Hospital Association.
The MUSC Health Inpatient Diabetes Program has been officially recertified by the Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has received the 2017 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

MUSC Health Awarded Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement from The Joint Commission
In 2017, MUSC Health earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. The advanced certification is for Joint Commission-accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of their services and patient care.
With this recent certification, MUSC Health becomes the only health care provider in the Lowcountry to have Joint Commission certifications in both shoulder and hip and knee replacement surgery. It also elevates MUSC Health to an elite group of only 37 hospitals nationwide that have attained Advanced Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. MUSC Health has the only hospital within the state and the Southeastern coastal region to have achieved this recognition.

The Consumer Choice Award names MUSC as the 2016-2017 Winner of the Preferred Hospital in SC Award. NRC Health annually provides Consumer Choice Awards for the most-preferred hospitals in markets across the U.S. Winners are selected from the nation’s most comprehensive, nationwide consumer health care profile, Market Insights from NRC Health. Since 1996, NRC Health has awarded hospitals whose consumers have recognized them for providing quality healthcare services.
MUSC Health Hollings Cancer Center is one of fewer than 70 cancer centers in the nation — and the only one in South Carolina — to receive a designation from the National Cancer Institute.
The Medical University of South Carolina received the first place award recognition for the 2016 Vizient Excellence Award! The Vizient Innovation Excellence Award was designed to recognize member health care organizations that are developing or adopting innovative technology solutions that have enhanced or changed their care delivery models or efficiencies. Submissions were judged by a panel of innovation industry leaders on desirability, feasibility and viability of the solution in the general marketplace.
One of the future methods of quality assessment in health care is via electronic means. MUSC Health was named by the Joint Commission as one of only 39 hospitals as a Pioneer in Quality. These hospitals lead the nation on the journey towards electronic clinical quality measure adoption.

2016 Mission: Lifeline® Receiving Center GOLD PLUS Recognition Award recipient. MUSC is part of an elite group of hospitals recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for our quality of heart attack care as demonstrated through our 2015 ACTION Registry®-GWTG™ data. This award recognizes our success in implementing a high quality of care program by ensuring that our STEMI program treats patients according to nationally accepted guidelines.
The Institute of Psychiatry was presented the 2016 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) South Carolina Hospital of the Year award at the NAMI SC Annual Mental Health Conference on Friday, August 19th. The award is presented to the hospital that demonstrates a commitment to serving the mission of the National Alliance on Mental Illness by raising mental health awareness, and offering education and support to those affected by mental illness and their family members.
Throughout the past decade, the Institute of Psychiatry has partnered with NAMI to provide a weekly NAMI Connection support group for our inpatients, host the Family to Family program each Spring and Fall, and graduate over 150 staff members from the Provider Education Program. Our local NAMI members are active on the Institute of Psychiatry’s Patient Family Advisory Council. This council has been awarded grants to fund the purchase of bus passes for our patients who rely on public transportation and to create an activity cart for psychiatric patients being boarded in the MUSC Emergency Department and awaiting an available bed at the Institute of Psychiatry. This is the fourth Hospital of the Year award from NAMI SC. The IOP received the award in 2006, 2008, 2012, and 2016.
He is also the Patient and Family Advisory Council Advisor.
MUSC Health has been nationally recognized for its inclusion efforts in caring for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients and their families. MUSC Health has been designated as A Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality in the 2016 Healthcare Equality Index. The designation was given by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation for meeting several factors required for equitable care, including nondiscrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for staff members. The American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) has awarded the MUSC Health PCICU a Silver Level Beacon Award. For patients and families the Beacon Award signifies exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall satisfaction. For nurses, a Beacon Award signals a positive and supportive work environment with greater collaboration between colleagues and leaders, higher morale, and lower turnover.
U.S. News & World Report recognizes hospitals whose excellence in patient safety, patient engagement, and clinical connectedness improves patient care.
MUSC Health's Digestive Disease Center is now a member of a select group to receive the prestigious Center of Excellence designation from the National Pancreas Foundation (NPF). This designation requires a high level of expertise in all areas of pancreas disease diagnosis and management, and NPF provides this resource so patients can find specialty-care centers close to them. According to the GI Surgery Division Chief and Islet Cell Transplant Program Director, Dr. Katherine Morgan, "Only 30 hospitals nationwide have received this designation to date."
MUSC Health was awarded a Safe Surgery 2015 designation from the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) for the successful implementation of the surgical safety checklist. This is a testament to a team approach led by the medical staff.
MUSC Health has received the American College of Cardiology's NCDR ACTION Registry-GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2015. The award recognizes premier participating hospitals that have sustained performance measure score composites of 90 percent or better in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction patients for eight consecutive quarters, ending quarter four 2014.
MUSC Medical Center was named one of the 100 SafeCare Hospitals for 2014-2015 in the over 400 beds category in 40 Affordable Care Act metrics. The SafeCare Group stated that "if all US hospitals attained the 100 SafeCare Hospitals level, we could reduce the more than 400,000 hospital deaths and close to 5.1 million preventable complications per year."
MUSC Health was one of only five medical centers in the country recognized by the AHA - McKesson for quality. According to their website, "The prize honors hospitals that:
- have committed in a systematic manner and can document achievements in the Institute of Medicine's six quality aims - safety, patient (and family)-centeredness, effectiveness, efficiency, timeliness, and equity;
- are taking steps to improve the health status of their communities; and
- provide replicable models and approaches for the hospital field."

SC Blue Cross has recognized MUSC Health as a Blue Distinction Center+ for cardiac care. This distinction recognizes medical centers for delivering quality care while also meeting cost-efficiency requirements. Only four medical centers in South Carolina received the Blue Distinction Center+ designation. Research shows that Blue Distinction Centers and Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and associated infections. Blue Distinction Centers+ are at least 20 percent more cost-efficient than nondesignated medical centers.
Health Magazine has rated the MUSC Health Weight Management Program as one of the top 15 weight management programs in the country. As the article states, medical weight loss centers "meet two important criteria: They offer an evidence-based treatment plan (meaning the methods are backed by solid clinical research), and they are closely supervised by MDs and other medical professionals."
