Shoulder and Sports Medicine pioneer Dr. Richard Hawkins spoke at the MUSC Department of Orthopaedics’ Grand Rounds this past week.

Dr. Hawkins is a founding member and Past President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, former Team Physician to the Canadian Olympics in Calgary, and former consultant to the United States Ski Team. Dr. Hawkins is currently practicing in Greenville, SC, where he founded the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas and is Team Physician for the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind.

Dr. Hawkins’ contribution to the orthopaedic community is not only seen in his extensive research and publications, but used on a day-to-day basis with the Hawkins Test to assess shoulder impingement.

Dr. Hawkins shared his journey through life and orthopaedics with the department, focusing on the importance of support from family and friends and providing words of motivation from Isaac Newton, John Wooden, Mahatma Gandhi and countless others. The MUSC Shoulder and Elbow team and the Orthopaedic Department as a whole thank Dr. Hawkins for sharing his time and experience with us and we hope you enjoy some of his favorite quotes just as much as we did.
