aerial view of MUSC campusThe Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has grown from a small private medical school founded in 1824 into one of the nation’s top academic health science centers, with a 700-bed medical center (MUSC Health) and six colleges that train approximately 2600 health care professionals per year.

As an academic medical center or teaching hospital, MUSC Health is at the forefront of the latest advances in medicine, with world-class physicians, groundbreaking research and technology that is often among the first of its kind in the world. Patients also benefit from a multidisciplinary team approach to care that involves the close collaboration of specialists from many different areas.

The SafeCare Group Names MUSC Medical Center One of Its 100 SafeCare Hospitals® for 2014-2015

MUSC Medical Center was named one of the 100 SafeCare Hospitals for 2014-2015 in the over 400 beds category in 40 Affordable Care Act metrics. The SafeCare Group stated that "if all US hospitals attained the 100 SafeCare Hospitals level, we could reduce the more than 400,000 hospital deaths and close to 5.1 million preventable complications per year." MUSC was one of only five hospitals in the country recognized by the AHA - McKesson for quality. According to their website, "The prize honors hospitals that:

  • have committed in a systematic manner and can document achievements in the Institute of Medicine's six quality aims - safety, patient (and family)-centeredness, effectiveness, efficiency, timeliness, and equity;
  • are taking steps to improve the health status of their communities; and
  • provide replicable models and approaches for the hospital field."

MUSC Receives the AHA Gold Plus Achievement Award and Target: Stroke Honor Roll for the Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Program

This award means our hospital team has been recognized for achievement in the Get With the Guidelines® Quality Improvement Program. It means you can expect care that's consistent with the latest scientific guidelines from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

MUSC Receives National Excellence Recognition for Workplace Wellness

MUSC successfully met all the requirements for earning Prevention Partners' Work Healthy America Excellence Recognition.  This is their highest honor for worksite wellness and honors organizations that have established a strong, sustainable culture of wellness and have achieved straight A's in all four areas of Work Healthy America: Physical activity, Nutrition, Tobacco Free and Culture of Wellness.

MUSC Transplant Program Designated as a "BDCT Plus" Blood and Transplant Program

According to Blue Cross/Blue Shield "Blue Distinction® Centers met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. Blue Distinction® Centers+ also met cost measures that address consumers' need for affordable healthcare." View a list of the designated centers in the country (pdf).

MUSC received an "B" rating for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group in the Spring 2014 Hospital Safety Score.  The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Scores grades hospitals on data related to how safe they are for patients. For more information, visit

Best Doctors are at MUSC

Close to 300 Charleston-area doctors either employed at or affiliated with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) have been named to the 2014 "Best Doctors" list by Best Doctors, Inc. Doctors on the list represent more than 46 specialties including cardiovascular disease, neurosciences, pediatrics, family and internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology, obstetrics and gynecology and surgery.

MUSC recognized by SC Blue Cross for high quality, low cost cardiac care

SC Blue Cross has recognized MUSC as a Blue Distinction Center+ for cardiac care. This distinction recognizes hospitals for delivering quality care while also meeting cost-efficiency requirements. Only four hospitals in South Carolina received the Blue Distinction Center+ designation. Research shows that Blue Distinction Centers and Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and associated infections. Blue Distinction Centers+ are at least 20 percent more cost-efficient than nondesignated hospitals.

MUSC Hollings Cancer Center has also been awarded three year, full accreditation from the American College of Surgeons for the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

Weight Management Program

Health Magazine has rated the MUSC Weight Management Program as one of the top 15 weight management programs in the country. As the article states, medical weight loss centers "meet two important criteria: They offer an evidence-based treatment plan (meaning the methods are backed by solid clinical research), and they are closely supervised by MDs and other medical professionals."

Accreditations and Recognitions

joint commision seal of approvalThe Joint Commission Accreditation

The Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards. To earn and maintain accreditation, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years. Laboratories must be surveyed every two years. The National Association of Epilepsy Centers has again recognized the Medical University of South Carolina Comprehensive Epilepsy Center as a Level 4 Center for 2014.

MUSC won national recognition in its continued quest to prevent health care-associated infections by receiving an outstanding achievement and leadership award. The 2013 award was given by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Critical Care Societies Collaborative in conjunction with the National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition to recognize MUSC's efforts to eliminate central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). By preventing 369 cases of CLABSI within the past 36 months, MUSC has saved 66 patient lives and $13.3 million in health care costs.

The MUSC Depression Research and Treatment Center has been awarded membership into the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC). The NNDC constitutes the premier academic centers in the United States, which study and treat depression and related co-morbid neuropsychiatric disorders.  MUSC is one of 22 such designated centers.

MUSC received recognition as a Quality Respiratory Care Provider.  Approximately 15% of hospitals in the U.S. have applied for and received this award. The website informs consumers that "Quality Respiratory Care Recognition" means First Rate Respiratory Care.
